I’m a little embarrassed to admit (okay, maybe more than a little) that I was never really a “dog person.” 🐶

In a weak moment this past September, I finally gave in to my spouse’s incessant wishes, and we rescued a big goofy English Bulldog named Maria.

My life is so much better because of it.

Here are five important life lessons that Maria reminds me of daily:

1.) Tell your favorite people how much you love them regularly. ❤️

If every person I encountered greeted me with the same excitement, enthusiasm, and love that Maria does every time she sees me, the world would be a much better place. So let your favorite people know how much they mean to you every single time that you see them.

2.) Be kind to others. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Maria is incredibly kind to every human, dog, or creature she encounters. She lets them know that she is happy to meet them and always assumes that others always have good intentions until they prove otherwise.

3.) Prioritize exercise 💪 and exploring the world. 🌎

Maria dances with delight when you ask her if she wants to go for a walk. She loves exploring the world and getting exercise every single day.

4.) Make sure you get enough sleep. 😴

Maria prioritizes sleep above everything else. She spends most of her day snoring (and farting) at my feet. She understands the importance of getting enough rest so she can live every moment that she’s awake to the fullest.

5.) Remain calm and don’t let the little things rattle you. ☮️

Maria rarely barks. I’ve heard her raise her voice 3 or 4 times total since she arrived in September. She understands that most of the little battles in life aren’t worth fighting, and she prioritizes staying calm and at peace.

Maria has taught me so much during her short time with us. I’m so incredibly grateful that she came into my world.

Needless to say, today, I’m a “dog person.” 🐶
